Addiction is using alcohol, drugs, sex, shopping, food, etc, to cope with our extreme emotions. Addicts are not addicts for fun or for the high. Addicts are addicted because they are using these substances to kill the pain. It can be from childhood abuse, rape, bullying, or even the same treatment we recieve as adults. We are taught from a young age that when you are in pain you can simply pop a pill, but our pain never goes away. Addiction is like having your hand on a hot stove and the only thing that can give you any relief from that searing pain, is to use your drug of choice. Addicts need more than detox, more than rehab. Many need years of therapy, as well as compassion, love, and acceptance. Things we never get from the world that only judges our surface. So we keep searching. Most of us die from our addictions on that path, never knowing real love, not only from others, but love for ourselves. Our dream is to reach out and help addicts in need.
